North Dakota Cannabis is Officially Front and Center
The young North Dakota cannabis industry put themselves front and center in the news this past week. Not even two full years ago they voted in medical cannabis, and before they even have a facility open for that, they announce a recreational usage vote. This is not just any old set of regulations like we’ve seen practically everywhere. As far as many are concerned, they don’t have many, if any regulations at all. As a citizen, you’ll be able to have as much on you as you’d like, and if you’re planning on growing it, there will be no limits on the amount. I’ll say that again. There will be no limits on a grower’s plant count!
This was the piece of legislation that sent shockwaves through the country. No limits? Seriously think about what that means for that state and its citizens.
North Dakota has a so much wide open space to utilize. Ranches and farms are a major part of that state’s economy. They gave its landowners and entrepreneurs an opportunity to be the largest producers of recreational cannabis in America, and as far as I know, anywhere on earth. In my opinion, it will pass easily when it’s voted on in November. They will make so many states look foolish and greedy as they blow past them in their legalization efforts.
They are a state that much like Oklahoma, votes red year after year. A few months ago, it was Oklahoma that said yes to medical cannabis. Their laws were applauded for lack of big government regulation seen in states like California, Washington, and Colorado. The citizens that make up this North Dakota cannabis industry are really progressive in their long-term thinking. If it gets repealed federally and it’s allowed to travel across state lines, they will be able to offer absurdly low prices to everyone nationwide because of the sheer volume of plants producing flower. Imagine being the farmer who has slaved away selling veggies decade after decade. Things are going to be looking up when they can sell tons of cannabis each week. Literally tons of it if they want to grow it!
What about the average citizen that doesn’t want to pay retail for their medicine? Feel free to grow as much as you’d like if this bill passes! 1,000 plants legally in the backyard can be possible next year in the great state of North Dakota if the voters turn out how they did in 2016. Imagine getting pulled over by the police with 500 pounds and just getting a ticket for the blown taillight you keep forgetting to replace. Amazingly enough, North Dakota is trying to set that scenario into play.
I’ve seen first hand how heavily regulated the industry has become living in Denver, Colorado. The Marijuana Enforcement Division can’t seem to find enough things to regulate, and just when the industry spends an arm and a leg getting prepared to do business one way, they will change something minor and make owners flush thousands down the toilet on products now useless. Those obsessive regulations are causing plenty of companies to cut as many corners as possible trying to stay afloat. When you cut corners, your quality suffers, and there is no debating that.
So only time will tell how this turns out. Even if the vote fails, South Dakotans still have medical coming to their citizens, and that’s a beautiful thing regardless. But the amazing set of laws laid out by the group in charge of gathering the votes is groundbreaking, and hopefully, they set a new standard on how new states will write their laws into place. No matter what, the North Dakota cannabis industry made big noise with this announcement. I personally will be keeping my eyes on this and hope to see the citizens of North Dakota show up and make it a reality.
